Field Trip to Asbury Woods

The Asbury Woods field trip on April 26, 2011 involved students in the Erie School District Champs Program that conducted energy audits in their schools. The Collegiate Green Team trained the elementary students to assess the energy usage in their buildings, develop recommendations, and implement action plans. Pat Lupo, Earth Action Erie, conducted follow-up sessions to assist the students in the implementation phase.

At Asbury Woods, students participated in activities involving energy and sustainability. Some of the activities included powering a car with moving water, solar panels, and wind turbines to compete in a race; measuring the effectiveness of new insulated windows compared to older windows; a tour of the building with a focus on green design; and competing in a game called "Who Wants to Be an Environmentalist?".

Attending Schools:

  • Harding
  • Jefferson
  • Irving
  • Pfeiffer-Burleigh

What the students had to say:

  • Amanda Lewis: "I really liked the plant roof. It was really cool. Also it was fun trying to find the Queen Bee. Thank you!"
  • Allie Walkiewicz: "I loved the solar cars and I was in first place. I'm happy I saw the queen bee with the flash light. I liked the animals and enjoyed learning the history of the building."
  • Jillian Spano: "My favorite part was the green roof. All of the recycled materials were cool. Playing the game was lots of fun too!
  • Dazhane James: "I like the tour about the history and how this place went from being a small cottage to a large green building. It was interesting to find out about the different types of heating solar and geothermal. The solar tubes in the ceiling were very cool."
  • Isis Atkinson: "The animal exhibits were great. I also enjoyed learning about the eco-friendly building materials during the scavenger hunt."
  • Melissa Wozniak: "I loved every part of the trip. Thank You!"
