Dual Enrollment
Attention any student eligible for dual enrollment: Gannon University now has spring course information available at www.gannon.edu/dual. You can also pick up a course booklet and registration in Mrs. Nichols' office. Registration is open to high school students after Nov. 18th. If you have any questions, call Mrs. Philip at Gannon (871-7411) or see Mrs. Nichols.
Collegiate Academy has formed a partnership with the four local colleges (Gannon University, Mercyhurst College, Edinboro University and Penn State Behrend) to provide 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to take college courses for high school credit. The college courses, whether taken for required or elective high school credit, are weighted as an Advanced Placement course and will be factored into the student’s GPA. Grades appear on the student’s report card along with the grades earned in Collegiate Academy courses.
These courses are offered as an enhancement to the Collegiate Academy course offerings and are totally optional. The colleges offer them at a greatly reduced tuition; each school has a different cost per credit and students must also purchase books. Students must travel to the college campus during the school day to attend college courses; their Collegiate Academy schedule is adjusted to accommodate the college course. Summer courses are available.
Please note that the college credit earned through this dual enrollment program may or may not be accepted at the college of your choice for attendance after high school graduation. Some colleges will only accept college credit that was not counted as high school credit; some colleges may not accept a course that is a required course in the student’s major. Students are responsible for researching colleges of interest to determine the school’s policy for accepting college credit that was earned prior to high school graduation.
High school dual enrollment is an excellent way for juniors and seniors to earn college credit at a reduced rate while completing the required credit for high school graduation. Students have enriched their knowledge in certain subject areas in anticipation of a rigorous choice of major and/or have pursued courses of interest simply to expand their own knowledge. Presently, on a year to year basis, the Pennsylvania Department of Education is providing grant monies to reimburse a portion of the expense of high school dual enrollment costs once the student has received a passing grade in the course.
Each school sets their own tuition schedule; the fees are greatly reduced from the cost of full time college students. Students must pay the tuition in full at registration. Once a student has completed a course with a passing grade, he/she must complete a tuition reimbursement form (available from Mrs. Nichols in room 119) and return it to Mrs. Nichols by January 10th for fall term and by June 1st for spring term. Please note that reimbursements are made on the year to year stipulations of the state grant and may not cover the full cost of attendance.
High School Dual Enrollment Tuition and Enrollment Information
Each of the local participating colleges (Gannon, Behrend, Mercyhurst) has an individual application procedure and fee schedule. Collegiate Academy uses Advanced Placement weighting for classes in core subjects (math, language arts, social studies, science, foreign language). Students must provide their own transportation. Mrs. Nichols coordinates registration and scheduling accommodations for all college courses; students must be registered with the college and with Mrs. Nichols. Erie School District students will submit copies of receipts for books/tuition to Mrs. Nichols for reimbursement (provided the PA state grant initiative is operative) once the course has been completed with a passing grade. Students whose home school district is one other than Erie must register with the home school district in January prior to the school year of intended dual enrollment to be eligible for grant reimbursement. For example, a student who resides outside the Erie School District must contact the school district where they reside in writing of his/her intent to take a course(s) in the next school year (summer, fall, spring). Reimbursement procedures may vary from school district to school district. Please contact your home school district for information.
