Scholarships

Abbott & Fenner offer scholarships to all high school juniors and seniors as well as students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution between the ages of 16 - 30. To apply, you will need to write an essay on one of the two topics below and send it to scholarships@abbottandfenner.com. Topics: 1. If you could have lunch with any famous person, either living or dead, whom would you choose and why? Describe your conversation at lunch. 2. When you look backon your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider you life successful?

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics offers an internet based applied math contest for high school teams of students: $80,000 in scholarship prizes available . Moody's Mega Math Challenge. Check out the website at m3challenge.siam.org. The 2009 Challenge weekend is March 7 and 8, 2009.

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award (SAMMY) program » A $7,500 college scholarship from the Milk Processor Education Program is offered to high school seniors. More info and applications at sammylbodybymilk.com until March 6, 2009.

Music Scholarships offered at Canisius College » Offered to music majors and minors as well as those students willing to perform with college ensembles. More information at www.canisius.edu/finearts. The deadline is January 15.

Junior Scholarship Opportunity » Discover Scholarship Program awards diverse high school juniors on their exemplary achievements in leadership and community service while overcoming an obstacle. Applications available at www.discoverfinancial.com/community. The deadline is January 31, 2009.

Ayn Rand Essay Contest » This contest is for all grades 9 – 12. Top prize is $10,000 and 472 prizes will be awarded. Check out the essay topics and details at www.aynrand.org/contests. Ninth and tenth grade deadline: March 20, 2009; eleventh and twelfth grade deadline: April 25, 2009.

Edgar Snyder & Associates “Words to be Heard” Scholarship Contest » Seniors, write a 1,000 word proposal for a program that discourages underage drinking and drunk driving. Silas H. Rhodes Scholarship » The School of Visual Arts(New York, NY) invites applications to the Silas H. Rhodes Scholarship Program from students with a 3.0 GPA who apply to the school. Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize »: High school sophomores or juniors are encouraged to enter the Kenyon Review poetry contest by visiting www.kenyonreview.org in the month of November. Each writer will register and electronically upload his/her poem. The winner will be published online and in the Kenyon Review; the winner will also be offered a full scholarship to the 2009 Kenyon Review Young Writers program at Kenyon College a residential two-week summer program. Runners up receive a partial scholarship.

McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship award » Available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business for at least one year while in high school. The business must have at least one paid employee. Awards are not based on financial need or academic record. Deadline Jan. 25, 2009; up to $10,000 per year for 4 years. 2009 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest» The JFK Library Foundation invites US high school students to write an original essay on the political courage of a US elected official. For info, registration and to submit the essay, visit the Profile in Courage Award Program at www.jfklibrary.org. First place - $5,000, second place - $1,000, up to five finalists receive $500 each. Deadline is January 10th. All students in grades 9–12 can participate.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards» Any student with an outstanding record of community service can apply online at www.prudential.com/spirit to be nominated as the school's top youth volunteer in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. All entries must be submitted by October 31st.

Gates Millennium Scholarship» Seniors with a 3.3 GPA, with demonstrated leadership abilities, financial need and are have a minority status (African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American) are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Students meeting all eligibility criteria require a principal, teacher guidance counselor or other professional educator to nominate them.
