College Summer Programs

Mercyhurst College North East is taking applications for a summer Nursing and Health Career Summer Camp. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students are encouraged to apply; registration forms are available from Mrs. Nichols in room 119. Deadline May 26th.

Miss PA Teen USA Any female student ages 14 - 19 interested in the Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA competition can get an application from Mrs. Nichols in room 119. Prizes, cash and awards to winners; no talent competition required. Deadline June 6th.

USAD Team Takes Third, Wins Several Medals

Collegiate Academy’s United States Academic Decathlon team won a host of individual medals and honors in its third-place showing in last weekend’s national competition.

Senior Amy Babay, honors division, won bronze medals in Art, Science, and Super Quiz; silver in Economics and Language and Literature; and an individual overall bronze medals, which came with a $500 prize.

Junior Stephanie Engel, honors, won a bronze in Science.

Senior Sumner Nichols, honors, won a bronze in Economics.

Junior Amal Abukar, scholastic, won a gold medal in the interview, scoring a perfect 1000 points. She also won silver in Speech and an individual overall bronze. Amal was also one of only 12 competitors selected out of 350 to present her speech in the Speech Showcase, the first time that a Collegiate Academy student earned this honor.

Sophomore Reeve Hunsaker, varsity, won a silver medal in science.

Collegiate Academy’s team fared even better than it did last year in many categories. It increased its overall team rank from 13th place to 9th and its medal count from 7 to 13. It also increased both its overall score and its high scores in each of the three divisions.

The team is coached by teachers Colleen Holmes and Laura Nicolia.

Reimbursement Forms for College Classes Due

Any junior or senior taking college courses spring term at Gannon, Mercyhurst, or Behrend must get a reimbursement form from Mrs. Nichols in room 119 once the grades are out for the course(s). The completed form, with a copy of the tuition/book receipt, must be returned to Mrs. Nichols by June 1 to receive reimbursement for this year.

Scholarship Notices Due

Please bring scholarship notices to homeroom on Tuesday, May 6th to complete as a college acceptance/merit scholarship form will be distributed. The information from this form will be used for the graduation program, senior acceptance display in the front hall and Excellence Ceremony. Any corrections in spelling of your name should be made on the form as well.

The 2008 Yearbook will be here in less than a month! Currently there are extra yearbooks available. Please order online at Jostensyearbooks.com or bring in a check for $57.24 payable to Collegiate Academy to Mrs. Kohan in Room 1. The number of extra yearbooks is limited and when they are gone, they are gone.

Attention sophomores, juniors and seniors: any dual enrollment registration/scholarship/summer program registration with a May 1st deadline must be submitted to Mr. Marnella or Mrs. Nichols by April 25th.

USAD Team Prepares for National Competition

Collegiate Academy’s USAD team, the 2008 Pennsylvania state champion, will represent Pennsylvania at the national Academic Decathlon competition on May 1 and 2 in Garden Grove, California. The team will compete in Division III, the small schools category. The team has faced two serious rival schools at the 2007 and 2006 national competitions—Park City High School from Utah and Madison Academic High School from Tennessee, and they are expected to offer the team its stiffest competition again this year. All events will take place at the Hyatt Regency Orange County, 11999 Harbor Boulevard, Garden Grove, California, 92840. The Super Quiz Relay will take place in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom on Friday, May 2 at 12:25 with the Parade of Flags. The awards banquet, also in the Grand Ballroom, will begin at noon; it should conclude at approximately 3:30 pm.
